Ukrainian flag raised in Kherson- Withdrawal of Russian forces complete, Moscow says

The Kremlin, through Dmitry Peskov, however insisted that it does not consider the withdrawal from Kherson “humiliating” and that it will not change the regime in the region

Russian forces have completed their withdrawal from the area of Chersona west of the Dnieper River, including the city of Kherson, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Friday.

The announcement comes after Moscow ordered a partial withdrawal from the region on Wednesday, marking one of the largest military failures for the Kremlin since the start of the war. The news caused intense celebrations on the part of Ukrainians.

“In the direction of Kherson, the movement of Russian military units on the left bank of the Dnieper River was completed at 05:00 [ώρα Μόσχας και ώρα Ελλάδας] this morning”, the ministry said on its official Telegram channel.

Not a single unit left military equipment or weapons on the right bank,” the statement said, referring to the west side of the river. “All Russian soldiers have moved to the left bank of the Dnieper” is noted.

The Kremlin, through Dmitry Peskov, however, insisted earlier that the withdrawal of Russian forces from Kherson would not change the regime in the region, which Moscow has declared part of Russia after annexing it from Ukraine. Peskov argued that the Kremlin does not consider it humiliating the withdrawal from Kherson, and also that the Russian government does not regret the ceremony held in Moscow for its “annexation” as well as the annexation of the other Ukrainian territories to Russia.

Russia claimed Kherson and three other Ukrainian regions after holding what it described as referendums in September — a process that Kyiv and Western governments have denounced as illegal and coercive. But on Wednesday, in a major setback, it announced that its forces would withdraw from the city of Kherson in the face of a major counterattack from Ukraine.

In a teleconference with reporters, the Kremlin spokesman said that the status of the region is “set and concrete” and that no changes are possible.
