The Ukrainian army entered the Kherson after the withdrawal of Russian forces, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense announced, at a time when thousands of Ukrainians had poured into the streets of the city, in order to breathe the air of freedom again and walk without occupying troops in the lands that belong to them.

Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Agency reported that Ukrainian units were entering Kherson and that the city was returning to Ukrainian control after being under Russian occupation since March.

THE Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine in her statement she addressed Russian soldiers still in Kherson, calling on them to surrender immediately.

In a statement issued in Russian, the Ukrainian service stressed that Kherson was returning to Ukrainian control after its occupation since March and threatened to “exterminate” any Russian soldiers who resisted.

“You have only one chance to avoid death – surrender immediately,” the Defense Ministry’s Main Intelligence Directorate said in a statement posted on Telegram.

The announcement, which is the first official confirmation that Ukrainian forces are in Kherson, gave guarantees for the safety of Russian soldiers who will surrender.

It said Russian soldiers still in the city have been ordered by their commanders to wear civilian clothes and go into hiding.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced earlier today that it had completed the withdrawal of its troops from Kherson and retreated to the west bank of the Dnieper River. He said Russia suffered no loss of personnel or equipment during the withdrawal.

The ministry did not comment on claims by Ukrainian officials that Russian troops in Kherson were ordered to wear civilian clothes.

It was not possible for Reuters to assess whether or how many Russian soldiers are still in the city.

A while ago, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that “in total, more than 30,000 Russian soldiers and almost 5,000 units of weapons and military vehicles have been withdrawn” from the west bank of the Dnieper.

The withdrawal of Russian forces is complete

Russian forces have completed their withdrawal from the area of Chersona west of the Dnieper River, including the city of Kherson, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Friday.

The announcement comes after Moscow ordered a partial withdrawal from the region on Wednesday, marking one of the largest military failures for the Kremlin since the start of the war. The news caused intense celebrations on the part of Ukrainians.

“In the direction of Kherson, the movement of Russian military units on the left bank of the Dnieper River was completed at 05:00 [ώρα Μόσχας και ώρα Ελλάδας] this morning”, the ministry said on its official Telegram channel.

Not a single unit left military equipment or weapons on the right bank,” the statement said, referring to the west side of the river. “All Russian soldiers have moved to the left bank of the Dnieper” is noted.

The Kremlin, through Dmitry Peskov, however, insisted earlier that the withdrawal of Russian forces from Kherson would not change the regime in the region, which Moscow has declared part of Russia after annexing it from Ukraine. Peskov argued that the Kremlin does not consider it humiliating the withdrawal from Kherson, and also that the Russian government does not regret the ceremony held in Moscow for its “annexation” as well as the annexation of the other Ukrainian territories to Russia.

Russia claimed Kherson and three other Ukrainian regions after holding what it described as referendums in September — a process that Kyiv and Western governments have denounced as illegal and coercive. But on Wednesday, in a major setback, it announced that its forces would withdraw from the city of Kherson in the face of a major counterattack from Ukraine.

In a teleconference with reporters, the Kremlin spokesman said that the status of the region is “set and concrete” and that no changes are possible.
