The watermelona symbol of hope for Ukrainians and Ukrainian forces as they press ahead with their offensive in the southern part of the country against Russian intruders?

And yet, yes. Photos and videos of people holding watermelons are increasingly appearing in many parts of the country as Ukrainians march against the Russian invasion. Videos on social media show Ukrainian soldiers holding up watermelons to cheers from crowds of people.

Politicians use fruit emoji in official updates. Some companies have incorporated watermelons into their logos. Even the post office has announced plans to issue a special stamp featuring…a watermelon.

The reason, simple. Ukrainian forces they forced the Russian army to withdraw from Kherson, the capital of the Kherson province and the only regional capital Russian forces had captured so far in their eight-month invasion.

And Kherson, with usually high temperatures during the summer months, is known for the quality of its watermelons.

The occupation of the region by the Russian forces, and the interruption of the export of the fruit was another economic blow for Ukraine.
