An explosion in a busy pedestrian area in Istanbul left at least one person dead and 11 others injured on Sunday afternoon, Turkish media reported.
Broadcaster TRT and other media show videos of ambulances and police leaving the scene. The cause of the explosion has not been clarified, and the exact number of victims is not yet known.
On Twitter, the city’s governor, Ali Yerlikay, said the explosion took place around 4:20 pm local time (10:20 am GMT) on İstiklal Avenue, Beyoglu district. Emergency teams, including members of Afad, the disaster and emergency management group linked to the Ministry of the Interior, were dispatched to the scene.
