39th Classic Marathon: Bone marrow donor and recipient finish hand in hand

by

In 2018, the teacher from Giannitsa, Georgios Chrysostomakis, was found compatible with a patient and today they ran the last 100 meters of the Marathon together.

The message of bone marrow donation was conveyed through their participation in the 39th Athens Classic Marathon by members of the Center for Informing and Attracting Volunteer Bone Marrow Donors “Give Life” of the University of Patras.

According to the report, in 2018 the teacher from Giannitsa, Georgios Chrysostomakis, was lucky enough to find himself compatible with a patient, who was looking for a foreign donor for a bone marrow transplant. The donation took place, the bone marrow transplant recipient is doing very well today, so donor and recipient have both expressed a desire to be de-confidential and meet in person. Since Mr. Chrysostomakis is a runner and would participate in the 39th Classic Marathon, he had the idea that the meeting and acquaintance of the two men should take place at the Marathon and that they “run” together the last 100 meters. As it happened. This meeting is connected to the desire of these two people to sensitize more people to the issue of bone marrow donation.

“Today we are here to celebrate in Kallimarmaro as Marathon Runners, sending the message that life is good and we must become bone marrow donors and give life,” said Georgios Chrysostomakis.
