Hopes for improved relations between the two rival powers – US President expressed desire to settle differences, Xi Jinping called for frank dialogue
Joe Biden and Xi Jinping held a much-anticipated one-on-one meeting today in which the US president told his Chinese counterpart that he hoped it would be possible to avoid a “clash” between Beijing and Washington.
After the two leaders shook hands, Joe Biden said he wants “to settle differences and prevent competition from turning into conflict.”
THE For his part, Xi said he was ready for a “frank” dialogue on strategic issues because the two countries need to “find the right direction”.
The leaders of the two rival powers are expected to have a lengthy meeting for the first time since Joe Biden took office, on the Indonesian island of Bali, ahead of a summit of the Group of 20 largest economies (G20) tomorrow Tuesday.
The two leaders have spoken by phone or video conference five times since Joe Biden entered the White House, but never in person although they have known each other since 2017.
