Russia’s behavior “creates shortages in the global energy market and causes prices to skyrocket,” von der Leyen argued
Russia is more interested in using its natural gas as a weaponeven if that means destroying it instead of selling it, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen complained today from the annual G20 summit.
Moscow cut off gas supplies to the EU earlier this year in retaliation for sanctions imposed by the bloc on its invasion of Ukraine.
“We see that Russia is burning its gas instead of selling it,” von der Leyen commented.
Russia’s behavior “creates shortages in the global energy market and causes prices to skyrocket,” he added.
For that reason the EU supports the introduction of a ceiling on the price of oilemphasized the president of the Commission, explaining that this will also benefit low- and middle-income countries.
“But our best response to this situation is to accelerate the transition to clean forms of energy,” emphasized von der Leyen. This “is the only answer to both the climate and energy crisis” which also offers huge opportunities for other regions of the planet.
Europe will invest at least €4 billion in renewable energy sources such as hydrogen over the next five years. This will also trigger massive private investment, she pointed out.
