Nelson de Sá: Xi smiles next to Biden, but remains suspicious

by

The Global Times/Huanqiu, a linked tabloid of the People’s Daily in Beijing, in the photo accompanying its first headline about the meeting on Monday, captioned: “Chinese President Xi Jinping Meets with US President Joe Biden, by request”.

At Biden’s request. The record disappeared the next day, when the initial suspicious tone of the Chinese coverage gave way to another, more hopeful and even happy, due to the photos.

At the top of the New York Times home page on Tuesday, “Following the meeting between Biden and Xi, Beijing signaled optimism,” with “an upbeat, upbeat photo of the two men in China’s leading newspaper,” the People’s Daily (reproduction above).

The NYT itself covered “upwards” early on, with digital headlines like “Biden and Xi signal openness to repair bilateral ties.”

In the newsletter of the also American Bloomberg, opening the day: “Biden and Xi have just taken the biggest step in years to avoid a clash between the two largest economies in the world. The result of their first meeting as leaders exceeded expectations.”

But the Chinese news agency Xinhua noted that Xi is still suspicious:

“Noting that Biden has said on many occasions that the United States does not support ‘Taiwan independence’ and has no intention of using Taiwan as a tool to seek advantage in competition with China, Xi said China expects the US to act to give effective effect to that guarantee.”
