The US and its NATO allies are investigating an explosion in Poland on Tuesday that killed two people, but initial information suggests it may not have been caused by a missile fired from Russia, the US said today. president joe biden.

Mr Biden made the statement after leaders of the G7, the EU and other nations met in Bali to discuss the explosions, which Poland and Ukraine said were caused by Russian-made missiles.

Asked about the estimates that the explosions were due to Russian missiles, the US president said that “there is preliminary information that calls that into question. I don’t want to say it before we finish the investigation, but it’s unlikely, from the trajectory, that (the missile) was fired by Russia — we’ll see though.”

The US and NATO will conduct a full investigation before acting, Mr Biden added.

The emergency meeting in Bali was called by Mr Biden today to discuss the incident in the Polish village of Szewodow (south-east), near the border with Ukraine, on Tuesday afternoon.

The meeting was attended by the heads of state and government of the USA, France, Germany, Britain, Italy, Canada and Japan, while the leaders of Spain, the Netherlands and the president of the European Council were also present. Participating states, except Japan, are NATO members, such as Poland.

If Moscow is found to be responsible for the missile strike, Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s founding treaty, under which an attack on any member state is considered an attack on all, could be triggered, and consultations could begin on possible military response.

Moscow denied that it was responsible for the explosions in Poland and spoke of “provocations”.

According to the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ambassador of the Russian Federation in Warsaw was summoned last night to be asked for “detailed explanations”. No details of what was said at that meeting, which ended around “midnight,” have been released.
