Russia blames Ukraine for Poland bombing, praises US for ‘restrained reaction’

by

In a statement to the press this Wednesday (16), Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied that Russia was responsible for the explosion in Poland that killed two people the day before.

He declared that the country “has nothing to do with the incident” and accused senior officials from Western countries of making unsubstantiated claims about Russian involvement in the case. “We are witnessing yet another hysterical, delusional and Russophobic backlash that has no basis in any real data,” he said.

At the same time, the spokesperson praised what he called a “measured reaction” by the United States to the situation. The country’s president, Joe Biden, had said after an urgent G7 meeting that preliminary information suggested the missile may not have been fired by the country led by Vladimir Putin. According to the Chancellor of Poland, the artifact is Russian-made.

Peskov claims that the missile actually belongs to the Ukrainian air defense. Kiev denies the information, and the country’s foreign minister, Dmitro Kuleba, called it a “conspiracy theory” in a post on Twitter. “This is not true. No one should believe Russian propaganda or amplify its messages,” he wrote.

The explosion hit the small town of Przewodow in eastern Poland, 6 kilometers from the border with Ukraine. The possibility of an attack by Russia against the country, which is a member of NATO, has increased tension and the possibility of more serious developments in the conflict that has been unfolding in Eastern Europe for more than eight months.
