OJ Simpson Gets Early Release by US Court for Good Behavior

by

Football legend OJ Simpson, the protagonist of a massive trial in which he was acquitted of his ex-wife’s 1994 murder, is freed from US criminal justice.

The 74-year-old former athlete and actor was released earlier this month from the parole he had been on for four years, following a conviction for armed robbery.

The sentence was supposed to be extinguished only in February, but the Nevada State Probation Board has moved the extinction forward by three months for good behavior, a local police spokeswoman said on Tuesday (14).

“Mr. Simpson is a completely free man now,” the defense told the Associated Press.

The conviction that he has just served now has nothing to do with his wife’s murder, but with another case, from 2007, when the former player was arrested for assaulting and kidnapping celebrity-related merchandise dealers in a casino in Las Vegas. The defense argued that he was trying to recover his own items that had been stolen.

Arrested in 2008, he left prison in 2017 and was then on parole, a system in which he had to appear regularly in court, take alcohol and drug tests and have a fixed address, among other conditions.

Despite his career as a football star, OJ Simpson is best remembered for the lengthy trial in which he was vindicated for the deaths of ex-wife Nicole Brown and friend Ron Goldman, in which case he was the only suspect. The crime prompted the television series “American Crime Story: The People Vs. OJ Simpson” and the Academy Award-winning documentary “OJ: Made in America”.
