The Ecuadorian government decided on Tuesday to ban religious ceremonies and celebrations in public places in view of Christmas and New Year due to the increase in cases of the new coronavirus, announced the Minister of Health, Jimena Garson.
“Events such as concerts, children’s parties, services and New Year’s celebrations will be banned in public places,” Ms Garson told a news conference.
The health authorities also decided to limit the reception of the public in exhibition centers, churches and shopping centers to 75% of their capacity during the same period.
For catering, the capacity will be reduced to 50% and a COVID-19 vaccination certificate will be required to enter the sector’s stores.
The measures were decided due to the “significant” increase in the number of SARS-CoV-2 cases, the minister explained.
Most of the infections are reported in the coastal provinces of Waya and Manavi, as well as in the Andean province of Pitsinca, where the capital, Quito, is located.
The Andean state – one of the first outbreaks of the new coronavirus pandemic in the region – has officially recorded 33,562 deaths due to COVID-19 complications out of a total of 533,588 confirmed SARS-CoV-2 cases since February, when the first the virus.
About 12 of the 17.7 million inhabitants of Ecuador have completed their vaccination program and more than 700,000 had received a third, booster dose by yesterday.
