Prosecutors have sought life sentences and arrest warrants for the four men accused of being responsible for the downing

A Russian-made missile shot down Malaysia Airlines flight MH17, according to the Dutch court’s decision. The flight was shot down over Ukraine in 2014, killing 298 people, passengers and crew.

The four suspects – Russians Igor Girkin, Sergei Dubinsky, Oleg Pulatov and Ukrainian separatist Leonid Kharchenko – did not appear in court to hear the verdict as they refused to attend the trial.

Reading the verdict, Chief Judge Hendrik Steenhuis said the court had decided that flight MH17 was shot down by a Russian-made BUK missile from a field in eastern Ukraine.

Prosecutors sought life sentences and arrest warrants for the four men, who remain at large.

All 298 people on board the flight were killed when the Boeing 777 flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17, 2014 was shot down by a missile over separatist-held eastern Ukraine. An international investigation found that the plane was hit by a Moscow-supplied missile fired from a village held by pro-Russian rebels. However, Moscow has repeatedly denied any responsibility for the incident.
