Cyprus: British pensioner charged with murder for killing his sick wife

David, 75, will plead guilty to manslaughter, according to his lawyer

75-year-old British pensioner David Hunter, who until today was accused of murdering his sick wife for helping her end her life last December, is in prison. Specifically, 75-year-old David is accused of murdering his 74-year-old wife Janice, who died in December 2021 at the couple’s nursing home in the seaside town of Paphos, where many British expatriates live.

However, after the efforts of his lawyers, 75-year-old David will not be tried for murder. According to a team working with the 75-year-old’s lawyers, at a hearing held today Friday at the Paphos Criminal Court, an agreement was reached with Cypriot prosecutors and Hunter will therefore submit an application to be tried for manslaughter on December 5, according to the Daily Mail. That means Hunter will be released from jail and returned to his home until his next hearing.

“We are very pleased that a murder charge is no longer on the table as our aim was to get David out of prison and back home as soon as possible. At the next hearing, David’s strong mitigating factors, such as his good character and long-term and loving relationship with his wife, will be put before the court. We hope, given the particular facts of this case, and the case law in similar cases from around the world, that the final sentence could consider the possibility of a suspended sentence. We thank everyone from the UK, Cyprus and around the world for their support of David and his family at this difficult time,” said lawyer Michael Polak, director of British defendants’ defense organization Justice Abroad.
