Luis Martinez has written thousands of poems about cities around the world – as vivid and descriptive – as if he had visited them. However, he has never left his home.

Cuban Luis Martinez works as a porter at the Trinidad bus station.

He was a small child when Castro closed the borders and now that he can travel abroad, he does not have the financial means. But with his mind, Luis has traveled the world.

The Poor Porter has written more than 3,000 poems about cities and landmarks around the world. In fact, he describes each part with vivid detail and precision as if he had seen it with his own eyes.

How did he do it?

During the last 20 years that he has been working as a porter, every day he chats with dozens of tourists from abroad and asks them information about their countries and cities.

In the evenings he studies old atlases and travel books – guides.

This is his way of “knowing” the world and bringing it to him every day, since he cannot go out there, as he stated to the BBC.

And if he lacks something from his encyclopedic knowledge, he fills it in with his imagination…
