The announcement comes as tough negotiations continue at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh on the final texts, at the end of which the US is expected to play a major role.

US special climate envoy John Kerry, who is leading the US delegation to the UN climate conference in Egypt, has been diagnosed with Covid, his spokeswoman announced on Friday evening.

The announcement comes as tough negotiations continue at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh on the final texts, at the end of which the US is expected to play a major role.

The 27th international climate summit was due to conclude on Friday but was extended to Saturday in an attempt to break the deadlock.

“John Kerry has been placed in isolation after testing positive for Covid in Sharm el-Sheikh. He has been fully vaccinated with the booster dose and has mild symptoms,” according to a statement from his spokeswoman Whitney Smith.

Kerry is “working by phone with his negotiating team and foreign counterparts to ensure a positive outcome at COP27,” the statement said.

Difficult negotiations continue in an attempt to settle the thorniest points that remain outstanding, notably compensation for the damage already caused by climate change and the fate of fossil fuels.
