The three-week-old owner of the social media site yesterday reinstated suspended user accounts, clarifying that “I haven’t made a decision about Trump yet.”
After causing a huge stir on Twitter, with hundreds of workers and executives to leave the company en masseThe Elon Musk moves on to the sensitive issue of regulating platform content.
The three-week-old owner of the social network restored suspended user accounts on Friday, clarifying that “I have not yet made a decision on (former US president) Trump’s account.”
Musk then polled whether Trump should be allowed back on Twitter after his major social media accounts were suspended in January 2011 following the Capitol invasion.
“Vox Populi, Vox Dei,” Musk wrote on Twitter, a Latin phrase meaning: “voice of the people, voice of God.” The poll has been open for 24 hours and early results show that 60% of respondents favor Trump’s return to the platform.

The Tesla chief who defends his vision of complete freedom of expression pointed out yesterday that “the policy of the new Twitter is freedom of expression, but not the freedom to attack” people.
Musk explained that “negative tweets or hateful tweets” will be demoted and will not be able to earn ad revenue. “You won’t be able to find these tweets unless you specifically search for them, which is no different than the rest of the internet,” he added.
Musk’s vision for Twitter, which has found itself at the center of political and social life in many countries, is of particular concern to organizations, authorities and advertisers. They fear it will remove existing safeguards, however inadequate, that protect against misinformation, harassment and other abuses.
Yesterday in an attempt to prove his neutrality Musk restored accounts that express political views opposite to his own.
Among them was the account of American comedian Kathy Griffin, who was banned from Twitter last week, along with other users, after she changed her username to “Elon Musk” to mock the new head of the platform.
The accounts of The Babylon Bee, a satirical US website, and Jordan Peterson, a conservative TV personality, also returned to the medium. Both were suspended for violating hate speech rules after targeting transgender people.
