Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has given the order to strike Kurdish targets in Syria and northern Iraq, according to Anadolu Agency, which also posted a video on Twitter showing Erdogan talking to Defense Minister Hulusi Akar. , shortly before the air attack began.

“President Erdogan ordered her Aviation Enterprise Gampso Xifos against areas in northern Iraq and Syria used as bases by terrorists. President Erdogan received information about the operation from Minister Akar,” the Turkish news agency’s post reads.

“The planes have taken off from their bases, the air operation has begun,” the Ministry of Defense said in a statement, a week after the bloody attack in Istanbul.

The operation is being conducted “based on the legitimate rights of defense as provided for in Article 51 of the UN Charter, in order to neutralize terrorist attacks from northern Iraq and Syria, ensure border security and eliminate terrorism at its source,” the announcement added.

During the night, the Turkish Ministry of Defense posted on Twitter: “The time of reckoning has arrived! The bastards will be held accountable for their insidious attacks,” referring to the November 13 attack on Istiklal Avenue in the heart of Istanbul. It killed 6 people and injured 81 others.

“Terrorists’ nests are leveled with precision strikes,” the ministry added in a second post, without specifying the targets hit.

Turkish authorities blamed the attack on the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the People’s Protection Units (YPG), a Kurdish paramilitary group operating in Syria that Ankara says is linked to the PKK.

Kurdish forces spoke of “Turkish army airstrikes” mainly in the city Kobani, at northeast syria, and in two villages.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported 12 dead, members of the Syrian Democratic Forces and six Syrian soldiers. In total, more than 20 hits of the Turkish army were recorded.
