“Sustaining the 1.5 degree commitment is critical to the future of our planet,” he wrote, adding: “we must do more.”
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak today welcomed the “progress” made at the COP27 UN climate conference in Egypt, but added that “more must be done”.
“I welcome the progress made at COP27, but there is no time for complacency,” he wrote in a statement released on Twitter.
“Maintaining the 1.5 degree commitment is critical to the future of our planet,” he wrote, adding: “we must do more.”
Even before the start of COP27, Rishi Sunak had called on world leaders “not to back down on the promise” to fight to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, which was decided at the previous climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland.
Rishi Sunak went to COP27, in Sharm el-Sheikh, after being strongly criticized for having initially announced that he would not go there due to his busy schedule in London.
Today, COP27 adopted a resolution which mainly envisages the creation of a fund to finance the damage that “particularly vulnerable” countries are already suffering due to climate change.
The decision was unanimously adopted by the plenary assembly at the close of the annual UN climate conference held in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.
