Forty-four dead and over 300 injured left behind by the 5.6 Richter earthquake that occurred on Monday morning in Indonesia, specifically near the city of Kianjur, 45 miles from the capital Jakarta.

The englade’s beating was superficial and it lasted almost three minutes and for this reason it caused great damage, even a landslide.

In fact, there was a collapse of criteria in Kianjur, the hardest-hit city of all, where most deaths were reported.

“Dozens of people were killed. Hundreds, perhaps even thousands of homes have been damaged. Right now, 44 people are dead,” Adam, a spokesman for authorities in the city of Sianjur (west Java) who, like many Indonesians, goes by only one name, told AFP. The previous count was almost 20 dead.

Commercial shops, a hospital and an Islamic boarding school in the city have suffered significant damage from the earthquake, according to local press.

Media published photos of several buildings in Siangjur, whose roofs have collapsed.

Officials say the toll could rise as civilians may still be trapped in the debris.

“We are asking people to stay out of buildings for the time being as there may be aftershocks,” Indonesia’s meteorological agency director Dvikorita Karnawati told reporters.
