Opinion – Ora Pois: Portugal wins five new Michelin stars

by

Portugal has five new restaurants with a Michelin star. The announcement was made late on Tuesday (14), at the launch ceremony for the 2022 edition of the Iberian version of the famous gastronomic guide.

Among the novelties in the starred list, only one is in Lisbon: Cura, led by chef Pedro Pena Bastos, at the Ritz Four Seasons hotel.

The main tourist destination in Portugal, the Algarve region has two new starred restaurants: A Ver Tavira, by chef Luís Brito, and Al Sud, run by Louis Anjos.

In Porto, the new representative on the list is Vila Foz, by chef Arnaldo Azevedo. In Reguengos de Monsaraz, Alentejo, the Esporão restaurant, under the baton of Carlos Teixeira, also won its first star.

Esporão also won the so-called Michelin Green Star, a seal of sustainable practices introduced by the guide in the previous year’s edition. Only one more Portuguese restaurant received the ecological award: Il Gallo d’Oro, in Funchal, capital of Madeira.

With the update of the Michelin guide list, Portugal now has 26 restaurants with one star and seven with two stars.

Although no Portuguese restaurant has lost stars in this edition, the country still doesn’t have any house with three stars, the maximum distinction of the award.

Among the restaurants that renewed their stars, there are two with Brazilian sommeliers.

Run by chef Eneko Atxa, the Enecko (one star) restaurant in Lisbon has wine specialist Diego Apolinário.

Also in the Portuguese capital, Alma, by chef Henrique Sá Pessoa, has Pedro Henrique Ramos as head sommelier.
