The need to create a demilitarized zone around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant was underlined by the French president Emmanuel Macron and Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky during a phone call they had today.

The French president, who contacted the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency Raphael Grossi by phone yesterday on this issue, stressed that the Agency should intensify its efforts to achieve the withdrawal of all military forces from the nuclear plant. As mentioned in a related announcement of the Champs-Elysées, the French and the Ukrainian president estimate that the root of the problem lies in Russia’s illegal possession of the nuclear power plant.

The two presidents also discussed the issue of Ukraine’s needs ahead of winter. This issue will be the subject of discussion at the International Conference on Aid to Ukraine which will take place on December 13 in Paris. Macron and Zelensky agreed that the issue of energy supply to Ukraine should be the absolute priority of the Conference.

At the same time, Emmanuel Macron said that other nuclear plants in Rovno and Khmelnytsky as well as the Nova Kakhovka dam had been targeted. He also pointed out that Volodymyr Zelensky thanked France for its continuous support to the Ukrainian army.
