The members of the European Parliament will cut off their contacts with officials and institutions of Iran, in response to Tehran’s sanctions against MEPs, the president of the body, Roberta Metzola, said on Monday.

“We will have no further contact with the Iranian authorities,” Ms Metsola insisted.

Iran has been rocked by a series of mass demonstrations and crackdowns since mid-September, fueled by outrage over the death of a young Iranian-Kurdish woman, Mahsha Amini, at the hands of the morality police, who accused her of not wearing the headscarf “correctly”, allowing it looks part of her countenance, thereby violating the extremely strict dress code for women in the Islamic Republic.

“In response to the unacceptable Iranian sanctions against this parliament, there will no longer be direct contacts between EP delegations and committees and Iranian officials until further notice,” Ms Metsola said.

“We do not look away from everyone who looks towards us on the streets of Iran. We are with you. We will remain with you”, added the 43-year-old European People’s Party politician.
