Since Friday (18), Mato Grosso has registered an escalation of violence on the BR-163.

The state’s highways were again the target of blockades and other criminal acts supposedly in retaliation for Minister Alexandre de Moraes’ decision to block the accounts of 43 suspected of involvement in anti-democratic demonstrations by Bolsonaristas who do not accept the result of the election.

According to the concessionaire Via Brasil, which manages the stretch of BR-163 between Sinop (MT) and Miritituba (PA), a company employee was surrendered in the functional vehicle in Itaúba (MT) around 11 am this Monday (21). He had his uniform and vehicle stolen by a criminal, who then used the items to block the track.

Minutes later, two tank trucks — one of them loaded with corn — were pulled onto the highway and set on fire. Then, one of the criminals kidnapped the concessionaire employee, freeing him in Cláudia (MT), about 120 km from the place where he was kidnapped.

The blockade resulted in a 2-kilometer traffic jam in both directions.

In Sinop, in the concession area of the company Rota do Oeste, a man was filmed unloading a load from a truck and setting fire to the vehicle’s cabin. Firefighters and the PRF (Federal Highway Police) responded to the incident.

Also on Monday, the Military Police arrested two suspects involved in attacks on vehicles, headquarters and employees of dealerships operating on the highway.

The men were in a Ranger pickup truck and were carrying a revolver, ammunition, nine gallons of gasoline, a lighter, machetes, a slingshot with stones and R$9,900 in cash.

The cases add to others registered in recent days. On Saturday night (19), an armed group of ten men invaded, shot and set fire to trucks at the base of the Rota do Oeste dealership in Lucas do Rio Verde (MT).

On Sunday night (20), in Sinop, two parked trucks had their windshields hit by shots at a gas station on the banks of BR-163, in the urban area of the city.

Brazil has been facing anti-democratic demonstrations on highways and in front of barracks since October 30, when Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) beat President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the presidential race. Since the 1st, the decision of the STF has been in force to clear the highways.

In one of the few public demonstrations since the election, Bolsonaro released a video calling for the highways to be cleared, but saying demonstrations elsewhere were welcome.
