Democrats will be able to release some of Trump’s tax records, possibly after a vote in the full House of Representatives

Democratic members of Congress have been dealing since yesterday with managing the challenge of analyzing the former president’s tax returns. Donald Trump covering a period of six years.

On the other hand, Republicans are preparing to take majority control of the House of Representatives less than six weeks from today.

Members of the Democratic-controlled House Oversight Committee hope to receive the relevant tax documents and information within the next week, following Tuesday’s move by the U.S. Supreme Court. US, rejecting Trump’s appeal that aimed to block the audit of his tax records by Congress.

The committee first sought access to the reported tax data from 2019, when Trump was still US president, and their release is subject to federal restrictions on the confidentiality of their use.

However, Democrats will be able to release some of the former US president’s tax records, possibly after a vote in the full House of Representatives.

Democratic members of the committee have until Jan. 3 to process the information before Republicans take over majority control of the legislature.

Republicans secured a narrow majority in the November 8 mid-term congressional elections, and soon after placing them in committees and changing the numerical correlations in the composition of the House of Representatives, they will be able to stop the related investigation into Trump’s tax records. .

Democrats on the same committee have said it is necessary to review Trump’s tax records to assess whether the IRS has conducted a proper tax audit of Trump’s income returns and to decide if the initiation of such a development requires the passage of new legislation.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett, a Democrat who is a member of the same committee, said its members may have to work even on weekends and during the holiday season to review Trump’s tax returns.

“There is, of course, the alternative solution of making these data public. The time pressure that exists is an additional reason to consider such a development,” Doggett told CNN.

“There is a way that we can advance the tax documents to the House of Representatives and the said legislature can take action on this issue. Such a development will allow the information to be made public, while then it will be possible to process it with more care”, he added.

A representative for the same committee did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the plans the committee has drawn up regarding its action on the particular issue.

Democrats on the Senate Finance Committee, which is the equivalent of the Senate Oversight Committee, are considering their available options regarding taking any action related to Trump’s tax returns, a committee aide said on condition of anonymity.

These two committees are among the congressional committees whose chairmen may receive personal tax information under US federal law. The third committee is the Joint Committee on Taxation.

The Supreme Court ruling put a real hurdle in Trump’s plans to block congressional scrutiny of his tax records. Trump is facing multiple state and federal investigations as he seeks to run for another term in 2024.

Republicans said the Supreme Court’s decision not to block access to Trump’s tax records could allow Congress to turn personal tax information and the IRS into political weapons.

“The Supreme Court has no idea the consequences of its inaction,” Kevin Brady, the top Republican on the House Oversight Committee, said in a statement. “They are opening a new and dangerous field of political conflict in which no citizen is safe.”

Committee members will consider what information related to Trump’s tax records can be released when Congress returns to full session next week.

The House of Representatives is currently adjourned for today’s US Thanksgiving holiday and will return to parliamentary business next Tuesday. The new holiday period for Christmas and New Year begins on December 15.

Members of Congress face a December 16 deadline to continue funding the US government.
