An investigation into the drainage system under the Colosseumwhich lasted about a year, brought to light findings that helped researchers better understand the content of the events and the habits of the spectators.
Among other things, bones were found that were certified to belong to bears and felines, which were probably used in beast fights or hunting competitions.
More than 50 bronze coins from the period of the late Roman Empire were found, as well as a silver coin dedicated to Marcus Aurelius and the completion of ten years since his rise to power, the statement said.
Fruit seeds (such as figs, grapes and melons) and remains of olives and nuts indicate the eating habits of spectators watching events at the Colosseum, the famous amphitheater of ancient Rome.
Alfonsina Rousseau, director of the Archaeological Park of the Colosseum, emphasized that the findings contribute to a better understanding of “the experience and habits of those who visited this place” to watch the spectacles.
