“I wanted the children to be able to imagine the playground as a miniature city, designed especially for them,” said the artist.
For the playground “Doha Modern Playground”, which he created in his capital Catarrh the artist spoke Shezad Dawood. Located in the park Al Masrah Parkthe playground features miniature versions of four well-known Doha buildings.
The artist worked closely with the architect and architectural historian, Fatma Al Sahlawi, to select the buildings: the Sheraton Hotel (by William Pereira), the National Theater and Ministry of Information (by Triad CICO), Qatar University (by Kamal El Kafrawi) and Qatar Post (from Twist & Whitley). Built between 1982 and 1987, the four buildings are according to Dawood “a key group of modernist buildings that really represented the shift towards an independent nation”.
“Each of the buildings I refer to has its own design quirks and quirks which naturally lend themselves to interpretation, such as the iconic pigeon cages of the Qatar Post Office or the conversion of the colonnades of the National Theater and Ministry of Information into tunnels to crawl the children in them,” explained the artist, speaking to Dezeen.
“I wanted the children to be able to imagine the playground as a miniature city, designed especially for them,” he emphasized.
