Chinese-Canadian singer and actor Chris Wu, a huge star in China and with international commercial partnerships, is making headlines in Asia today as he was sentenced to 13 years in prison, mostly for rape, in a case that caused a scandal in the country.

The 32-year-old artist was sentenced to “11 years and 6 months in prison for rape,” according to the ruling by Beijing’s Chaoyang District Court, which added that the pop star “was also sentenced to one year and 10 months in prison for the crime of gathering people for sexual debauchery” and will be deported from China when he serves his sentence.

After the outcry caused by this scandal, companies such as Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, L’Oréal and Porsche, which he represented, suspended their cooperation with him.

The scandal that sparked #Metoo in China

The Chinese-Canadian is a former member of the Chinese-South Korean boy band EXO. She left the group in 2014 to pursue a solo career as an actress, singer and model.

According to the Chaoyang court, investigations showed that from November to December 2020, Wu Yifan raped three women.

Last year he was accused by a 19-year-old Chinese student of date-raping her when she was 17.

More victims have since come forward online, accusing Wu’s team of predatory behavior, particularly at boozy karaoke parties they were invited to.

These accusations sparked the start of a #Metoo movement in China, but it has since stalled.

Fearing an uncontrollable mass movement, censors controlling the internet quickly blocked social media hashtags and keywords related to cases of sexual harassment.
