Violent incidents broke out in Brussels after victory of the Moroccan national football team against that of Belgium in the World Cup held in Qatar.

Tempers flared when the Moroccans’ first goal was disallowed, while tensions escalated in the second half. The website speaks of 150 young people who had gathered in the areas of the stock market and the Gare de Midi. The atmosphere was also tense in Molenbeek.

Footage posted on social media and reproduced by Belgian media shows burning bins and an empty vehicle overturned in the middle of the road. The police tried to disperse the crowd by pouring water under pressure, while they prohibited traffic on several streets.

Police said rioters used pyrotechnics, threw objects and some armed with sticks set fire to public roads, destroying traffic lights.

“A journalist was injured in the face by flares”, according to the police who then decided to intervene with vehicles with water cannons and the use of tear gas.

A hundred policemen were mobilized in the police intervention, who were attacked with objects.

Police have asked residents and fans to avoid certain areas of the city centre. Metro stations were closed and roads were blocked.

“I condemn in the strongest possible terms the events of the afternoon. The police have already intervened decisively. That’s why I advise against sports fans coming to the city center. The police are doing everything they can to maintain public order,” Brussels mayor Philippe Clos responded on Twitter.

“I have ordered the police to arrest the rioters,” he added.
