Russia has unilaterally postponed nuclear disarmament talks with the US that were scheduled for this week, Kommersant newspaper reported, citing the US embassy.

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed in a statement that talks between Moscow and Washington in Cairo will no longer take place this week.

Officials from the two countries were due to meet in the Egyptian capital from November 29 to December 6 to discuss resuming inspections under the New START nuclear arms reduction treaty.

The New START Treaty between the US and Russia was extended last year for another five years and aims to reduce the strategic nuclear weapons possessed by the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals.
