As of late last week, searches for what’s going on in Beijing, Shanghai and other major Chinese cities turned up nude women in provocative poses, erotic videos, ads featuring luxury escorts and other unrelated posts.

Many of the tweets reviewed by CNN on Monday came from accounts that were created months ago, follow virtually no other accounts, and have no followers of their own.

The apparent misinformation campaign by suspected bots about new Twitter boss Elon Musk, who has personally pledged to fight bots and spammers.

However, layoffs and mass departures from the popular medium raise concerns about its ability to combat such phenomena.
