Ukraine: “Battle” to restore electricity, while the temperature dropped to 0 degrees

The largest private power company has announced that it will cut power by 60% in Kyiv as temperatures move to 0°C

Ukraine continued to struggle to fully restore power today, nearly a week after a wave of Russian missile strikes damaged energy infrastructure across the country.

The national energy grid management company Ukrenegro said the electricity deficit had increased marginally since yesterday, following the emergency shutdown of many factories and an increase in consumption as winter sets in.

Until 11:00 am on November 29, electricity producers provide 70% of electricity consumption in Ukraine. The current capacity deficit is 30%,” Ukrenergo said on its Facebook and Telegram apps. “We emphasize that the general deficit in the energy system is a consequence of seven waves of Russian missile attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure.”

Russia has been shelling Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since early October, with damage piling up as the temperature drops. The last big wave last Wednesday caused widespread damage.

DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private power company, announced yesterday that it will cut electricity supply by 60% to consumers in Kyiv as temperatures hover around 0°C.

The government has asked consumers to conserve energy to prevent the need for more emergency power outages and to help crews repair the damage.

Ukraine maintains that attacks aimed at causing suffering to civilians constitute a war crime. Moscow claims it is attacking legitimate military targets.
