About 200 fishermen were rescued on Monday after they found themselves stranded on a huge piece of ice in one of its lakes Minnesotain the northern US.

Around 11:30 a.m. Monday, at Upper Red Lake, near the border with Canadarescue services were told that about a hundred people, who had gone ice fishing, found that the piece of ice they were on was no longer connected to the shores of the lake.

Rescuers who arrived at the scene saw that a large piece of ice had broken off and was floating freely in the lake. A distance of about 27 meters separated it from the shore.

With the help of drones, rescuers found a narrower point where they were able to create a makeshift pontoon to take the stranded fishermen away. They also activated a mobile phone alert system after worrying that other hikers, further away, had not yet realized they were in danger.

After all, about 200 people were safely removed from the lake, Beltrami County police said.

Minnesota is also called the “Land of 10,000 Lakes”. Ice fishing is a very popular winter activity in this State.
