The EU will try to create a special court for Russia’s war crimes in Ukraine with the support of the United Nations, the president of the Commission announced today Wednesday Ursula von der Leyen.

The special court will investigate and prosecute potential war crimes committed in Ukraine by Russian forces.

Ms. von der Leyen notes in her video message that “Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has brought death, destruction and untold suffering,” specifically referring to “Buka horror”.

“It is estimated that more than 20,000 civilians and 100,000 Ukrainian military personnel have been killed so far. First, Russia must pay for its horrific crimes, including the crime of aggression against a sovereign state,” he stressed.

“We will work on an international agreement with our partners to make this possible. And together we can find legal ways to achieve this,” he said.

“We are ready to start working with the international community to achieve the widest possible international support for this special court,” noted the president of the Commission.

The European Commission has also proposed a plan for confiscation Russian assets which have been frozen to punish Moscow for invading Ukraine.

“We have blocked 300 billion euros of Russian central bank reserves and frozen 19 billion euros of Russian oligarchs’ money,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement.

He added that the EU and its partners could manage these funds in the short term and invest them. The proceeds could be allocated to Ukraine to compensate for the damage caused to the country.
