Outgoing senior Metropolitan Police officer has revealed there were real threats from the far right

The fact that the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle received “disgusting and very real” threats while working for the royal family, the outgoing senior officer of the British Metropolitan Police, Neil Bassou, has revealed.

Speaking to Channel 4 News, Neal Basu said he would understand if Meghan Markle felt that “constantly threatened”, adding that prosecutions have been brought for these threats.

Prince Harry, who moved to California with Meghan Markle in 2020, said last year he did not feel safe visiting the UK.

The couple have opened up about the treatment they endured before stepping down from their royal duties and the effects it had on their mental health. As far back as 2016, after their relationship went public, Harry had issued a statement against social media “trolls” for targeting Meghan.

“If you had seen the things that were written and received, the kind of rhetoric that is on the Internet, if you knew what I know, you would feel threatened all the time,” Neal Basu said.

Asked if there had been real threats from the far right, he said “of course. We had teams investigating. Prosecutions have been brought for these threats.”

He said he had previously spoken publicly about the threat of “far-right terrorism”, saying it was the “fastest growing” threat he faced.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as senior members of the royal family in 2020 and resumed their lives in the US.
