Refugees who fled Ukraine to escape war and have settled in Wales will be asked to cover part of their accommodation costs by paying for meals and laundry, the Welsh Government announced on Thursday.
They will be required to pay after five weeks of adjustment or they will not be eligible for services. They should either have credit or deposits or find a job, the government explained.
Another change is that anyone who refuses two “reasonable” offers for accommodation and asks for something better will be charged between £25 and £37, depending on the size of the household.
Around 3,000 refugees were relocated to Wales under the Homes for Ukraine programme. They live in hospitality centres, hotels, universities or commercial tourist accommodation until they find work and adapt to life in Wales.
According to the Welsh authorities, more than 500 refugees have now found a longer-term housing solution or are renting houses alone.
Jane Hutt, UK provincial minister for social justice, said she was “proud” that “we were able to welcome so many people here”, adding that she was “humbled” that “so many people are living independently” now. He added that “we will continue to show our support to the refugees from Ukraine”.
