More than 1,000 residents will have to be moved to safer places today following a warning of dangerous weather with heavy rain on the Italian island of Ischia, where a landslide on Saturday left 11 people dead and one missing.
“More than 1,000 people will be evacuated from the danger zones from this afternoon at 16:00” (17:00 Greek time), said Giovanni Lenini, special commissioner for civil protection on the island, appointed by the government after the landslide that caused by heavy rains in the small town of Casamicola Terme.
The commissioner responsible for the administration of this community of 8,000 inhabitants, Simonetta Calcatera, clarified that all residents who will be removed from their homes will be accommodated in hotels in other areas of the island, which is located near Capri, in the Gulf of Naples.
He also called on residents not to use their own vehicles but the buses that will be available to them.
According to an official of the local civil protection service, 40 to 50 mm of rain is expected for today, while about 100 mm had fallen in this area on November 26, the day of the disaster.
