Martina Borkhart, one of the residents of the house said she will keep the decorative lanterns on – “We will not let them take us down”
A German couple in the northwestern town of Delmenhorst couldn’t believe their eyes when they received a threatening letter after lighting up their home, the ‘Christmas House’ as it’s known, with… 60,000 festive lanterns.
Martina Borkhart, one of the residents of the house, said the letter was anonymous and its authors threatened to destroy the decorations if the lanterns were not turned off. The letter referred to the ongoing energy crisis facing the country, justifying the threat.
“We were shocked,” Borkhart said, noting that she and her husband have filed a complaint with police, who are investigating the case for attempted extortion, a police spokesman said.
It is not known who sent the letter and authorities said officers will be patrolling outside the home.
The “Christmas House” in the state of Lower Saxony is famous for its flamboyant Christmas decorations, which Borkhart takes months to put up as she has done every year for the past 20 years.
Locals gather every year to watch the lights come on.
Martina Borhart said she will keep the decorative lanterns lit. “We’re not going to let them beat us,” he said.
He explained that they also collect donations from people who pass by and look at the bright decoration.
The proceeds the couple raise from sales of the popular German Christmas drink Glühwein go to the local school. Ultimately, this money is used to fund therapeutic riding for children.
