The proposal to abolish the House of Lords is included in a report on constitutional changes by a committee led by Gordon Brown
London, Thanasis Gavos
In abolition of the House of Lords the leader of the British opposition Labor Party Sir Keir Starmer intends to do if he becomes prime minister in the next election.
He said the move would take place within Labor’s first term in government, as the second, unelected legislature was an indefensible anachronism.
The proposal is included in a report on constitutional changes drawn up on behalf of Labor by a committee under the former prime minister Gordon Brown.
The report also proposes greater devolution of powers, with new financial, tax and even legislative powers for lord mayors across England and for devolved governments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
It is also provided for second job ban for MPs, and moving 10% of government employees from London to other cities.
