Colombia: At least 34 dead in landslide that swept away bus

by

Earlier yesterday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro had spoken of 27 dead, including three minors.

At least 34 people were killed in Sunday’s landslide in northwestern Colombia’s Risaralda province that buried a bus and other vehicles in the mud, according to the latest official tally.

“In total, 34 people were killed and nine others were injured. Three of the injured were pulled alive from the bus and six others from a car that overturned in the same spot,” said the head of the natural disaster response agency (UNGRD) Diana Ramirez to AFP.

Earlier yesterday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro had spoken of 27 dead, including three minors.

Due to the heavy rains, a part of the mountainside collapsed, crushing several vehicles on a country road, including a motorcycle and a bus carrying about 30 people.

The bus had departed from the city of Cali (southwest) to cross the Andes mountain range to Quibdo (northwest).

Videos from the scene of the tragedy show the frantic efforts of rescuers to locate survivors. The images of the rescue of a child whom rescuers found in the arms of his dead mother and freed from the wreckage of the buried bus were heartbreaking.

According to the survivor’s testimony, the bus driver tried to reverse when he noticed the landslide, but was unable to.

Since early August, the country has been facing its worst rainfall in 40 years, according to the government, which has declared a state of “national disaster”.

More than 300 people have died and nearly 700,000 have been left homeless by floods and landslides this year in Colombia.
