Ukraine has struck two military bases in central Russia, hundreds of kilometers from the border between the two states, using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the New York Times reported, citing a Ukrainian official.

The strikes show Kiev’s “new will” to “carry” the war into the heart of Russia, the US newspaper reports.

The UAVs took off from Ukrainian territory. Their strikes destroyed at least two aircraft at one of the bases and damaged several others, the NYT reported.

Last night, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that attacks had been launched against air bases in central Russia. “The Kiev regime (…) attempted to carry out strikes with Soviet-designed drones on Diaghilev Air Base in Ryazan Region and Engels Air Base in Saratov Oblast,” according to the press release it released.

The purpose of the Ukrainian operation was to destroy “long-range Russian aircraft” used in strikes against Ukrainian energy infrastructure, according to the same source.

Always according to the version of the Russian Ministry of Defense, although these UAVs were intercepted by Russian air defense systems, their debris fell on the bases, causing explosions, killing three servicemen, injuring four others and causing “slight” damage to two Russian strategic bombers.
