The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on Friday reiterated the warning that the country is experiencing a “big wave” of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. Boris Johnson stressed that Omicron is “a very serious threat to us now”, adding that “people need to be prepared and understand what is needed”.
However, Mr Johnson insisted that no further action was needed at this time.
By contrast, warnings and measures have been tightened in Wales and Scotland, where local Prime Minister Nicola Sterzion has revealed that Omicron has become sovereign. While last Friday the new variant accounted for 15.5% of all Covid cases, today this percentage is 54%.
Ms Stergion said the R’s Micronesia breeding rate in Scotland was “probably above 4”. He added: “The tsunami I warned about last week has started to hit us.”
However, the latest estimate for the overall R value for coronavirus in England has now risen only marginally, to 1.0-1.2. It is noted that this assessment essentially relates to the situation with the spread of the virus about two or weeks ago, the time between infection and testing and recording of the case.
Public health officials have said that in fact the R value for Omicron ranges from 3 to 5 across the UK. This means that each vector of the variant infects another three to five individuals.
