The number of people who have been sentenced to death in Iran has reached 11

Five people have been sentenced to death and eleven others to “long prison terms” for the killing of a member of the militia during protests in Iran, a spokesman for the judiciary announced today.

With these convictions they amount to 11 people who have been sentenced to death in Iran for their participation in the protests that have rocked the country for more than two months
.
The five convicts were found guilty yesterday monday for the murder of Ruholah Ajamian in November, of a member of the Basij militia, which is linked to the Revolutionary Guards, said Massoud Setayesi. “All of them can appeal to the supreme court,” he added.

The five were accused of “corruption on Earth”the most serious charge in the Iranian penal code.

A woman was convicted also, but the sentence imposed on her was not specified.

An unprecedented protest movement has erupted in Iran since her death Mahsa Amini on September 16, of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, after she was arrested by the morality police for not wearing her headscarf properly.

According to local media, Ajamian was killed on November 3 in Karaz, 30 kilometers west of Tehran, during a rally to mark the 40th anniversary of Amini’s death.

According to the indictment, the convicts attacked Atjamian, who was unarmed, stripped him, stabbed him, beat him and then dragged his body down the street.

Iranian authorities denounce “rioters” who participate in the protests and regularly accuse the US, its Western allies and Kurdish groups based abroad of inciting the protests.

More than 300 people have been killed in the unrest, including dozens of members of the security forces, a Revolutionary Guard general said last week. Thousands more have been arrested.
