Moscow has turned to Tehran to deal with the acute ammunition shortage it is facing, a UN diplomatic source told the German news agency.
Russia has ordered hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and ballistic missiles from Iran, a diplomatic source at the United Nations told the German news agency on Tuesday.
“We know that Iran intends to increase deliveries to Russia,” to supply it with “large quantities” of such weapons systems, the source said, adding that Moscow was turning to Tehran to deal with the acute ammunition shortage it is facing.
“I don’t think they’ve been sent yet,” the source added.
Russia has reportedly already used hundreds of Iranian-made Shahed-136 UAVs.
Moscow denies that it uses so-called “kamikaze” UAVs. However, Iran confirmed in November that it had supplied remote-controlled drones to Russia.
In response, EU member states imposed new sanctions on Iran, which already had a range of punitive measures in place.
Under a UN Security Council resolution adopted after the 2015 deal on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear energy program, Iran is barred from entering into such arms sales deals.
The US, Britain, France and Germany in October called for an investigation by the international body into the attacks using Iranian-made weapons systems in Ukraine.
