Anti-climate change activists in Italy threw paint at its entrance today famous opera house La Scala before the season opener, local police said.

The movement Ultima Generazione (UG, Last Generation) has announced that it is taking responsibility for the protests in Milan.

The group of protesters held up a banner that read “Ultima Generazione – No Gas, No Coal” and threw blue and pink paint at the entrance to La Scala. Five people were arrested, according to a police statement, and taken to the department for identification, while they will be referred to the prosecutor. Cleaning crews quickly removed the paint from the theater entrance.

La Scala will open its 2022-23 season today with a performance of the Russian opera Boris Godunov, composed by Modest Mussorgsky. The premiere is expected to be attended by Prime Minister Georgia Meloni for the first time as head of government, the country’s president Sergio Mattarella and the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
