London, Thanasis Gavos
Yellow warnings for a significant drop in temperature and frost has been put in place by the Met Office in the UK, lasting until Friday.
The mercury is expected to fall on Wednesday night even to -10 degrees Celsius in areas of rural Scotland and to -6 degrees in areas mainly of northern and eastern England, due to arctic cold winds.
The extremely low temperatures will be maintained almost throughout the country until Friday, with a slight increase over the weekend and noticeably milder conditions than Tuesday.
The meteorological service calls on citizens to heat their homes to at least 18 degrees Celsius, as well as to move around protected from the cold, with hats, gloves and scarves.
In the areas that will be most affected, heavy snowfall and frost are expected, as a result of which travel will be affected.
In London, where the temperature is expected to drop in the coming nights to -3 degrees Celsius, Mayor Sadiq Khan activated for the first time the Emergency Protocol for Adverse Weather Conditions, which mainly provides for the provision of accommodation to the homeless, but also increased attention for the needs of other vulnerable population groups.
Meanwhile in Sheffield a major incident has been declared by the relevant authorities, as a leak from a central water pipe caused damage to natural gas supply pipes. The breakdown has left around 2,000 households without heating and hot water.
