More than 3 million households in Britain cannot afford to heat their homes, with forecasters predicting a wave of cold temperatures and snow.

Drivers are expected to face difficult conditions on the roads, due to ice and bad weather, making train journeys take longer than usual.

The UK’s Health and Safety Executive has issued guidance, urging citizens – and especially vulnerable people – to have constant temperature in their homes at least 18 degrees Celsius, wear extra clothes and eat hot food.

However, about 3 million households they cannot afford to follow this advice because they cannot afford it.

The research was carried out by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and economist Rachelle Earwaker said: “Dangerously cold weather is a cause for concern. People are forced to choose between outstanding debt and their health.”

And all this happens while the very low temperatures they are likely to last for quite some time.

“Showers will become heavier with an increasing risk of snow as the week progresses, particularly in coastal areas or higher ground,” the Met Office said.
