Bayer: €11,000 compensation to French farmer with health problems from herbicide

The farmer claimed compensation of more than 1 million euros.

Height compensation 11,000 euros the German company was forced to pay Bayer, following a French court order, to a farmer for accidentally inhaling herbicide, ending a 15-year legal battle, according to French media.

Paul Francois told franceinfo “11,000 euros for such a great sacrifice”, as had requested compensation of more than 1 million eurosaccording to a Reuters report that Bayer did not immediately respond to.

According to franceinfo and Le Monde, the exact amount of compensation is 11,135 euros.

The farmer had claimed that the fumes he inhaled from the herbicide Lasso, a product that was later withdrawn from the French market, caused him neurological problems, including memory loss, fainting spells and headaches.

The incident happened in 2004.

France’s Supreme Court in 2020 rejected an appeal by Lasso’s maker, Monsanto, which had since become a subsidiary of Bayer, paving the way for the Lyon court to decide how much compensation to award the farmer.
