EUMED-9 Summit: Economy, energy and immigration on the agenda of Southern Europeans

by

The heads of state and government of the southern European countries will meet today in Alicante, Spain

The issues of the European economy, energy and immigration will be, according to French diplomatic sources, at the center of the consultations held today in Alicante, Spain by the heads of state and government of the countries of the south of the European Union (Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Greece, Cyprus and Malta ).

As to financial issues Paris estimates that southern European countries have more or less common perceptions on the issues of fiscal discipline and the stability pact and therefore it is possible to show common positions in the consultations that will take place at the European level on the basis of the proposals recently submitted by the European Commission. The French side will also argue in favor of creating a plan to stimulate European industrial production, along the lines of the American IRA.

As for energy issues the French president, the Spanish prime minister and his Portuguese counterpart are to formally ratify the BarMar design, for the submarine pipeline between Barcelona and Marseille. The pipeline will carry hydrogen and not gas, which paves the way for European funding, the Elysee Palace explains. “This is a European issue and the presence of the President of the European Commission in Alicante is a proof of this fact,” says a French diplomatic source. In relation to energy prices, Paris estimates that the nine countries that will meet in Alicante “converge on the idea that the proposed ceiling presented by the Commission is insufficient”.

End of what it concerns the immigration France’s relations with Italy are still troubled after the recent incident with the ship “Ocean Viking”, which, after Italy refused to welcome it, sailed and disembarked the migrants it had rescued in Toulon, France. The French side believes that the discussion should take place at the EU level and that it will concern both the future application of international law in the Mediterranean, as well as solidarity with the countries that are “on the front line”.
