Spiegel revelation: Former Chancellor Brad was an informant of the American CIC counterintelligence

by

Former German Social Democrat Willy Bradt is believed to have been a US military counterintelligence (CIC) informant for four years, according to Der Spiegel.

Bradt, who served as chancellor from 1969 to 1974, provided information to the CIC from 1948 until March 17, 1952.

The magazine writes that Bradt informed the CIC about the FDJ, the youth of the German Democratic Republic and the ruling United Socialist Party (SED). He also claims to have provided information on Soviet Army shipyards, factories, the railway system and the telephone network.

According to sources, he met with his liaisons at the CIC, who described him as trustworthy, more than 200 times in four years and codenamed “O-35-VIII”.

Bradt, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1971, resigned after it was revealed that Guenter Guillaume, his close adviser and right-hand man, was an Stasi agent. He died on October 8, 1992 in Unkel, near Bonn.
